Chapter 37

I CHANGE INTO the clothes Sebastian left for me, collect my damp ones, make his bed, and head outside.

Harper leans against the passenger door of my car, her Audi convertible parked beside my Jetta. She eyes my outfit and scowls. “Enjoy your sleepover?”

Crap. For maybe the second time in my life, I’m at a loss for words. What do I say? Where do I start? How much do I tell her? Is it any of her business?

“No way those clothes are Sebastian’s.” Her upper lip curls with disgust. “Did you sleep with him?”

“No.” I didn’t, although given all we’ve done it doesn’t seem possible.

“Pfft.” She rolls her eyes and straightens from the passenger door. “Yeah, right.”

“I’m telling the truth,” I snap. “I didn’t sleep with him. I’m still a virgin. I swear.”

“Then you must have passed out in his bed and he didn’t have the heart to move you, because why else would you have been in his room all night?”

“Why are you so mad?”

“I’m mad because I told you he was bad news. And you’re supposed to be my friend, but if you’ve been hooking up with the guy you knew I liked behind my back that wouldn’t make you very trustworthy.”

Gah! I clench my jaw to keep from blurting what I really want to say. Yes. I hooked up with Sebastian behind her back, but not until after she got together with Nathan. She’d moved on, and it’s not like they were dating. Sebastian wasn’t interested in her at all. I didn’t stop them from hooking up. He and I didn’t plan what happened between us. It just happened, and we’re way past pretending we can stay apart. But all this needs to remain a secret.

I stalk to the driver’s side of my car, unlock the door, and toss my clothes onto the passenger seat. “Why do you care so much about Sebastian? You’re with Nathan.”

“I am. And I like him a lot, but this isn’t about him. It’s about us and the friend code.”

“I wouldn’t betray our friendship, but if you’re bringing up the friend code—that you made up in high school—you broke it plenty of times.”

“Not to you, and we’re not talking about high school. We’re talking about now.”

“You did do it to me,” I shriek and calm myself. “When I liked Kayden and you started dating him. That hurt, but I didn’t throw it back in your face.”

She juts her hip. “No? Because it feels like you just did.”

“This is stupid. I don’t want to fight with you.”

“Then tell me the truth. Do you like Sebastian?”

“Like? Yes,” I admit. “Despite the rumors and what that girl told you, he’s nice to me and a good friend.”

She tsks and rounds the front of my car. “Good friend? Since when are you two so chummy?”

“Well, I work for him. We talk almost every day, and we like each other’s company.”

She lets out a bitter laugh. “You’re talking like you have a relationship with him when there is no relationship to have.
